Are you treading water?

It never fails!

When I am consulting with a potential new client and I ask about their health and fitness history and then their current habits I hear time and time again… I diet and do cardio.

Makes sense, right? After all, to lose weight we must burn more than we take in. To lose one pound a week we must eat 3500 less calories that week or burn 3500 calories or do a combination of both. Do enough cardio to burn 3500 calories in a week you lose a pound.

Sounds simple, right?

If it is that simple, why do so many people have issues reaching goal through restrictive dieting and cardio.

If it is that simple, why do so many more have issues maintaining weight through restrictive dieting and cardio?

If it is that simple, why do so many people have expanding waist lines, increased body fat, and more problems maintaining weight with each decade.

More importantly, if it is that simple, why are we seeing so many over fat/ weight people and/ or skinny fat people in all age groups busting their asses cycling, running, walking miles and not changing their bodies or health for the better?

This is a conversation that my partner in life and crime, Alex, and I were having yesterday as we were inline skating on the belt line. We encountered so many busting their asses running, walking, cycling for miles ranging from teenagers to those in their 60’s yesterday as we do every outing; and yet, their bodies do not reflect their efforts.

This was not a conversation engaged by two individuals (Alex and I) from negative judgement. It comes from two individuals who fully understand fitness journeys. We each have our own.

Alex, having dropped from 33% body fat (he was skinny fat) to about 20% body fat within the last 10 months he, has personally experienced transformation in appearance and health. He has also gained a newfound respect for working out with weights and a new understanding of what it means to be truly healthy and fit.

And I, like so many females, focused heavy on cardio and restrictive eating my earlier years to keep slim and trim. I thought I was in such great shape. Don’t get me wrong, I looked pretty damn good (part genetics for the shape and part effort to keep fat away so shape could be revealed); however, the habits needed to maintain that slim and trim were not sustainable; and, quite honestly, not a quality of life. Yes, I was lean and had low body fat but I also did not put on the muscle necessary to create a fat burning machine less cardio. More importantly, I had not transformed my body into a fat burning machine; and actually, caused damage to my metabolism that I had to later repair and heal.

How did I cause damage?

Cardio, as great as it can be for fat loss and heart health, burns more than just fat- its burns muscle. Muscle is key to increasing our resting metabolism. The more muscle we have the faster our metabolism. Muscle is what keeps us toned and tight as we age. The less muscle we have the slower our metabolism; therefore, if we are burning/ not maintaining or building muscle we are harming our metabolism, health, and ability to maintain weight.

It becomes a vicious cycle of having to do more and more cardio to maintain. And it typically leads to more restrictive dieting.

Alex said it best it basically is like your “treading water”. You eat… you burn… you eat… you burn… and you really never see change.

You don’t sculpt much change or improvement in the body.

You don’t change your metabolism for the better.

You don’t really see much, if any, improvement in overall health.

You never really reach body goals.

And, You ultimately create bigger problems to heal and correct!

You think it is genetics and/or your body type and/or age holding you back… when it is simply your habits holding you back!

You, like so many including myself for years (and I knew better), are simply focusing on the wrong habits.

What if? Just what if, focusing on the right things actually corrected all the wrong habits and…

Changed your body for better?

Changed your health for the better?

And, you actually, finally reached goals you have had all along?

What if maintaining a tight and toned body became easier?

What if you could build your fastest metabolism, best body, and best health ever… and easily maintain it the rest of your life?

Regardless of your current health and fitness!

Regardless of your current age!

And you don’t have to starve yourself or stay hungry to get there?

It’s is simple, its just not easy! If it were easy we would all look like bikini competitors:)

It’s simple- it’s simply changing to what works.

It’s not easy because It requires change in habit and habits are hard to break both mentally and physically- especially by ourselves.

I did not break old habits alone, Alex did not go from 33% body fat to 20% body fat alone, and chances are you will not alone.

We are all really great at cheating ourselves when no one is watching, no one is monitoring, and no one is tracking our progress.

Are you ready to stop treading water?

Are you ready to stop cheating yourself from the body you envision? The health you desire? The energy you crave?
