It’s simple to lose weight… implement calorie deficit and you win! Meaning you either eat less than burn or burn more than you eat.
The reality is when most of us communicate we desire to lose weight we actually have a desire and goals bigger than just losing weight! We envision what we would like to see looking back in the mirror, how we would like to feel, the energy we would like to have, and the health we would like to achieve. Most important, we want lasting results!
Am I wrong?
So as simple as calorie deficiency sounds achieving our intention is not that easy.
I wrote in my series Why Lift Weights about the benefits weight lifting and building muscle has for the metabolism. Today I am going to discuss how dieting can harm the metabolism.
You see our bodies are intelligent machines! Our bodies have the ability to adjust. When we abuse our bodies by eating poorly and living sedentary, the body does it’s best to keep us going by giving us time to smarten up and take better care before critical health crisis . If only we all took advantage before critical crisis hit!
Because our bodies are so intelligent when we diet and restrict calories to a certain number of calories each day our bodies will at first lose weight.
And then, we hit plateaus!
Why?
It’s simple! We plateau because we have now slowed down our metabolism! Our bodies have adjusted to knowing how many calories it will received.
So how do we avoid this slow down?
We don’t count calories to eat an exact amount of calories each day!
Don’t teach your body it will get 1500 calories a day because it will adjust. Instead understand what range you stay within to lose and then to maintain.
Learn what foods to eat and what foods you should avoid to lose, to maintain, and for overall health.
I have created a daily tracker for my clients that teaches what to eat during their wake hours on active days and inactive days . In addition, I have created a food list so that they can make choices while they are learning. It includes a protein list, fat list, fruits and veggie list, a drink list including alcohol, and even an approved cheat list.
Getting healthy and fit shouldn’t equal starvation and deprivation.
Because dieting doesn’t work… lifestyle change does!
My daily tracker varies calories based on choices made so the body never plateaus… and never leaves a client hungry! To the contrary, most clients including myself struggle on days to eat as much as you have to eat to lose and maintain.
